Meal account vs. General account

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Meal account vs. General account! This is one of the most common questions Student Nutrition Services receives about school meals. Here is the difference:
Meal account- This account is for purchasing complete meals *only*. A complete meal is an entrée with a fruit and/or vegetable (but can include the whole offered meal of entrée, fruit, vegetable and milk). Anything besides complete meals comes out of the GENERAL account including extra entrees, snacks like chips/cookies/ice cream, extra milk, different drinks and even if you grab an entrée only.
General account- This account is for purchasing complete meals *and* extra items. Extra items vary by building and grade level but can include extra milk, special drinks, cookies, salty snacks, ice cream, extra entrees, etc. Your student can just buy complete meals out of this account with no problem, but it gives him/her the opportunity to purchase something extra if they want.
If you aren’t sure where to put money, Student Nutrition Services always recommends putting money in the GENERAL account. The only exception to this recommendation is if you want your student to be able to buy complete meals only.
Still have questions? Please don’t hesitate to contact Student Nutrition Services.
